John Michael Kahl born on December 19, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Henry and Margery (Ashton) Kahl. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy. John served in the Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict. After he was honorably discharged, John attended Central Michigan University where he earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. He enjoyed a 30 year teaching career, most of it with Saginaw Township Schools retiring in 1990. John also owned his own house painting company for 25 years. For years he was an avid runner, road racer and had the honor of qualifying for the Boston Marathan. He also enjoyed singing karaoke. John had a very deep devotion and love for animals. John was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister; long time member of the 82nd Airborne Association and the American Legion.
John leaves behind the love of his life, Cathy; his four children, Sandy Davis, Annette Lockwood, Stacey (Mike Jackway) Mistura and Brian Kahl; his step-children, Anthony (Alyson) Federico, Dominic (Daniela) Federico; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, Dominic, Rocco and Dino; his canine companion, Penny. John was preceded in death by his two sisters, Ellen Kahl and Lorraine Berry.
Funeral Liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Rd. Rev. Fr. Peter Gaspeny will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the United States Army and American Legion Post #22. Friends may visit at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Aleda E. Lutz V.A.
