Michael was born on December 8th, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Aloys Joseph and Catherine Bridget (Sullivan) Grohman. Michael was a 1956 graduate of Shrine of the Little Flower High School in Royal Oak, attended the Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, and furthered his education attending night school at the University of Detroit Mercy for 6 years to obtain a degree in Business Administration in 1965, which he paid for by himself. He also spent nine years as a member with the Air National Guard Reserves from 1955-1965.
On July 25, 1959, he married Ellyn Lee Miller of Berkley, Michigan and together raised a family of two boys and a girl in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Later moving to Saginaw, Michigan, Michael and Ellyn became members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church where Michael was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Michael served the church during his lifetime as an usher and money counter.
His career was spent working for Michigan Bell Telephone Company. He retired early at the age of 54. He enjoyed many hobbies, and was a man of “doing”, always occupied with a project. He became president of the, The Michigan Archaeologist Society, Saginaw Rose Society and the American Singer Canary Society and was a member of the Saginaw Area Watermedia Artists. He raised American Singer Canaries for over 40 years and later became a traveling judge for many bird shows. He was a golfer, winemaker, woodcarver and watercolor painter. His life was long and he was very active. Hidden Oaks, their up north woods property was his sanctuary. Spending time at the property hunting and with family was very important to him. Later, they were able to spend time at Hubbard Lake where he enjoyed fishing and more family time.
Michael is survived by his wife Ellyn L. (Miller) Grohman, his sister Mary Catherine Grohman of Rochester Hills, MI and his three children. Bradley and (Beth) Grohman of Lexington, MI, Jeffrey Grohman of Carsonville, MI and Lynne and (Ray) Score of Fraser, MI. His grandchildren include Rebecca Terenzi, Kelsey Chrzan, Patrick Score, Zachary Grohman, Jason Grohman, and step-grandchildren, Brian Hoppenworth and Josh Hoppenworth. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother John Patrick Grohman.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Rd., Saginaw, Michigan 48609. Rev. Fr. Peter Gaspeny will officiate. Friends may visit the family at the church on Friday from 9:00 until the time of Mass. The rosary will be prayed at 9:15 a.m. VFW Post #1859 and the Air Force will conduct Military Honors following the service.
