John Burdette Davenport

Loving husband, father, grandfather and great “Grumpy” passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.He was born in Zilwaukee, Michigan on September 20, 1940, to the late Halbert “Chick” and Marguerite (Spencer) Davenport. He graduated from St. Andrew’s High School in 1958 and soon after joined the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served his country from 1958 to 1961. On March 3, 1962, John married the love of his life, Lorraine Allman. John retired from Iron Workers Local #25 in 1995. After retirement, John remained busy traveling with his wife, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He managed the Mid-Michigan Toys for Tots drive for many years and was a proud member of the John C. Rock Marine Corps League where he served as Jag officer. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Saginaw. John enjoyed casino trips and playing cards.

 He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lorraine Davenport; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey (Jill) Davenport of St. Charles and Steven (Renee) Davenport of Saginaw; one daughter, Andrea Davenport of Cincinnati, OH; six grandchildren, Spencer (Alexis) Davenport, Marshall (Sara) Davenport, Parker (Meghan) Davenport, Audrey (Chance) Hardin, Alyssa (Seth) Berry and Ethan Davenport; 13 great grandchildren, Margot, Miles, Logan and Rori Davenport, Reese, Halle and Beau Davenport, Steele and Nash Carlson, Colten, Ryker and Grayson Hardin and Henry Berry; his sister Doris (Grant) Robinson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. John was preceded in death by a son, Sean Davenport; brothers, Halbert “Jack” Davenport and Michael Davenport, and sister, Susan Cryblskey. The family would like to thank The Care Team hospice group, especially RN Sara Bowen and the wonderful team at the Saginaw VA who all made sure John’s last weeks on this earth were comfortable.

 Funeral Liturgy will take place 11:00 a.m.  Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Rd., Saginaw. Rev. Fr. Peter Gaspeny will officiate with Military Honors by American Legion Post #439 and the U.S. Marine Corp. Friends may visit at the church where the family will be present on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. Honoring Mr. Davenport’s wishes cremation will follow. John’s cremains will be placed at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Aleda E.
