Dancing in the Sky!

Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the age of 98 years. Maxine was born on June 15, 1917 in Cass City, Michigan. Her parents were to Douglas and Laura (LaClair) Allison. She married Donald J. Steele, Sr, on October 18, 1935. Don predeceased her on June 18, 1981. They had been happily married for 46 years. They were blessed with five children: Lorraine (husband, Alvin Pool); Dr. Don Steele (ex-wife, Cheryl K. Lynes); M. Jeanne Steele (husband, John Morris); Bill Steele (wife, Phyllis Hamil); and Jack Steele (ex-wife, Shelley Truax Steele).
Maxine had three goals in life, namely: 1) to be a good wife; 2) to be a good mother; and 3) to raise caring, compassionate and good children who she wanted to have both roots and wings. The wings took hold and she loved to visit her grown children on Arizona, Nevada, Alabama and Florida.
Maxine loved to dance --- in ballrooms, at parties and even in the kitchen with her husband and life-time dance partner. Today they are dancing in the sky. She also found pleasure in cooking, sewing, playing cards, canning and scrabble. She also enjoyed hearing a good joke and always made others feel better about themselves.
Maxine also had a great sense of humor. Recently we asked her what was the best part of being 98 years old? Her response, "No peer pressure!"
Maxine truly believed in the value of education. The Steele household book collection included the World Books, Encyclopedia Britannica and a host of philosophy, biographical and other sources of knowledge. Her high school years were interrupted by the depression so she enrolled at the Tawas Area High School and graduated with honors at the age of fifty-seven. She then took classes at the Tawas Area Business School.
Maxine retired from the State of Michigan, Secretary of State's Office. She was also a very active member of the St Andrew Altar Society; St. Mary's Church in Hemlock and Lord Catholic Church in Decatur Alabama.
Surviving Maxine are two sons and one daughter, Dr. Don Steele, Bill Steele and M. Jeanne Morris; fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Fr. Peter Gaspeny will officiate the Funeral Liturgy 11AM Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Rd. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Hemlock.
